Naming our business has been fraught with sleepless nights, much gin drinking and frankly a lot of random arranging of letters to see what acronyms we could come up with. We definitely didn’t want a “does what it says on the tin” name. We amused ourselves for hours with names we didn’t want to use (turns out that part is really easy). For example doesmybumlookbiginthis.com and reallygorgouspiecesthatfityoureallywell.com bizarrely never made the cut.
Having finally decided on what we think will be an original and memorable name for the new business (a blog entry in itself) we have been investigating how we go about trade marking it. Seems it is expensive and actually pretty complicated. From the advice we have had you cant do global trade marks, you have to trade mark each country individually (at a cost) and you have to be very specific about the category you want to operate in. We think we will go for a hong kong trade mark application and then follow up within 6 months with any other countries that we want to protect ourselves in so that we can spread out the costs.
Before we push the button if anyone out there has any advice on the best route to go so we avoid wasting our precious cash then let us know.
